Ambiance Great America strives to provide a traditional amusement park experience. With stalls for popcorn and funnel cakes, game booths, and classic diners, Great America emulates a kid’s dream amusement park. The park’s legendary Maggie Brown’s restaurant was renamed Maggie’s Smokehouse & Fried Chicken, adding smoked tri tip, pulled pork, and rotisserie chicken to the menu.

Looking Ahead In the future, Great America plans on expanding the park to entertain a greater audience. Similar to downtown Disney, Great America is arranging an entertainment district for adults. Great America is also investing in many huge expansion plans, including the tallest rides and coasters in California.

Overall Great America is definitely the place to be for all thrill seekers. However, for those who get tired of too many rides, the shows, special events, and numerous shops and eateries still allow for an uber-fun time. This versatile and evolving park has something to offer every single visitor, having just implemented Winterfest to follow it’s Halloween Haunt, giving Bay Area residents even more reason to visit multiple times a year. With exciting new expansion plans in store, Great America is certainly the park to go to this summer.California’s Great America celebrated National Roller Coaster Day in a major way on Wednesday, announcing a groundbreaking new steel coaster set to open at the Santa Clara park in spring 2018.

What makes it unusual is that riders sit single-file on the coaster – with no one to the right or left – and basically straddle one rail. This allows for a greater range of quick, abrupt movements than traditional two-track coasters, which usually carry two (or more) passengers per row.

The coaster – the 15th in the park’s history – is the first of its kind, a “prototype, ” says Great America Vice President/General Manager Raul Rehnborg. It’s going to give the park “a whole ’nother” experience for its guests, he says.

The ride stands 100 feet tall and will whisk riders along 1, 800 feet of track at speeds of up to 52 miles per hour. Its selling points include a 180-degree stall (watch out for your hats!) and a “zero-gravity roll.” The coaster’s theme is State Route 1 (SR 1), the highway that runs along most of the coast of California.

RailBlazer was introduced during Wednesday’s groundbreaking ceremony, which was highlighted by a computer-generated video showing what it will be like to ride the coaster. The video was shown from the perspective of someone riding in the front of the coaster, generating big smiles from the crowd – and maybe a gasp or two – when it got around to that 90-foot drop.

Those on hand for the groundbreaking included Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor, representatives of the American Coaster Enthusiasts organization and media members, plus Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus and Snoopy (who got to help with the groundbreaking – that lucky beagle).

“We are excited for California’s Great America’s new developments and appreciate (owner/operator) Cedar Fair’s vested interest in our community, ” Gillmor said to the assembled crowd.

Family Fun With California's Great America

“We are excited that California’s Great America will be able to move forward with their new plan, which includes coasters 2.5 times larger than currently exist, expanded water park, an entertainment district in front of the park to entertain visitors 365 days a year, ” Gillmor said.

“Visitors to the park and its new entertainment district will fill our hotels and nearby restaurants, generating a surge of transient occupancy tax and sales tax for the city’s general fund, ” she said. “Visitors to the area will be able to shop locally and enjoy local entertainment venues to benefit our local and regional economy.”California’s Great America made a surprise announcement that a new ride is opening this Spring. No, it’s not a surprise coaster, but Liberty Twirler, a new scrambler ride for the park will open in May. The park has a surprising lack of spinny flat rides, so this is actually a pretty nice addition for families.

Liberty Twirler will open in the All Amercan Corners section of the park between Orleans Place and South Bay Shores. From the rendering it looks like it will take the spot where FireFall, the Top-Spin ride removed in 2016, used to sit. The whole area will be getting some upgrades and enhancements. That makes sense, with the most recent areas to get refreshed being on either side of it. The park seems to be steadily upgrading each area one at a time.

Along with the new ride, the park also announced this years entertainment schedule. The newest event is Carnivale at Orleans Place, running from July 20 to August 7. This is an upgraded version of the Taste of Orleans festival, including a new parade.

“At California’s Great America, we strive to provide season-long entertainment for our guests through a variety of experiences, ” said Barb Granter, general manager. “Between our exciting lineup of both new and expanding events, the addition of Liberty Twirler and other upgrades in All-American Corners, and everything our guests love about South Bay Shores waterpark, there’s something for everyone, every day of the season.”

Having teenage boys, it can be difficult to find that common ground, but one solution that is a winner with us is California’s Great America.

Six Flags Great America Opens For The Season With New Improvements

The day was perfect. The sun was out most of the day, with a few small clouds that provided just enough shade as it started to get hot. We arrived at Great America just in time for it to open and hear the National Anthem. We stopped, covered our hearts and sang before entering the park. I must say it was a nice surprise to have heard the National Anthem before starting our day.

As soon as we entered the park, there was someone there to take our picture. Then, we looked around wondering where to start. The boys took off towards the first roller coaster they could see, and our day had officially begun. Check out some of our favorite things from our visit below!

Our first ride, ended up being our youngest sons favorite ride. It’s a traditional wood roller coaster, but it goes fast! The first time we rode it, I only put my hands up after my younger son did! But when we rode it the second time, we all had out hands up the
