As part of a previously announced effort to introduce support for emerging digital wallet solutions, Bank of America this weekend began processing Apply Pay withdrawals at select ATMs in California, the first step in bringing wide compatibility to customers across the bank's nationwide network.
According to an unconfirmed report posted to Reddit on Sunday, Bank of America customers living in Redondo Beach, Calif., can now withdraw cash from certain NFC-enabled ATMs. The system does not appear to be fully operational, however, as deposits still require a physical debit or checking account card.
Received reports of Apple Pay integration at select Bank of America ATM locations in May. At the time, pilot program coverage was limited to two machines in San Francisco. Bank of America has not yet made an official announcement regarding ATM compatibility with Apple Pay, though it appears the service is slowly rolling out beyond the Bay Area. Like some point-of-sale solutions, compatible Bank of America ATMs bear a generic NFC logo and might not necessarily sport Apple Pay branding. On machines with activated NFC internals, customers simply open Apple Pay on their iPhone, tap the device to the reader, enter a PIN and make a withdrawal. No cards are needed as part of the process. Currently, Bank of America ATMs are restricted to in-house accounts, suggesting the backend service is not yet connected to out-of-network credit card processors. Reports of Apple Pay ATM compatibility arrived in January when Bank of America Consumer Banking Products representative Betty Riess hinted at upcoming support for mobile wallets. Riess explained the bank was developing a cardless ATM solution that would allow account authentication via NFC-enable smartphone solutions. An initial rollout was expected in late February at ATMs in Silicon Valley, San Francisco, Charlotte, New York and Boston, though the launch timeline was apparently pushed back. Apple Pay rival Android Pay in May also announced ATM support for Bank of America machines, though it is not clear if Google's system is up and running at this time.A number of residents across Orange County have noted on social media that their Bank of America ATM machines have been out of cash.

We put the ATM question to BofA representatives who told us the bank has seen a surge in demand thanks to the high volume of unemployment payments funded through the bank. A staggering 8 million people in California have applied for jobless benefits since pandemic lockdown orders shut thousands of businesses.
“Our ATMs have experienced unprecedented levels of use during this health crisis, especially around the 1st and 15th of the month due to our servicing the record number of California EDD cards that get funded on those days, ” said Colleen Haggerty, a senior vice president and spokeswoman for BofA. “We have increased maintenance of our ATM network, with 95% of our ATMs in Orange County currently operating normally and the remainder to be replenished as soon as possible.”

The Irvine-based company offers a free app it says blocks robocalls and offers call protection service for mobile phones. It determines volume and category of robocalls based on the behavior of billions of calls it handles for its app users.
“Robocalls continue to grow as countries around the world open up again, which is not unexpected, ” said YouMail CEO Alex Quilici. “While we don’t anticipate robocalls going back to peak levels, we fully expect the rising monthly trend to continue for some time.”

In July, the company said robocalls averaged just over 117.1 million calls per day, or roughly 1, 356 calls per second. July’s robocall volume was 36% below the all-time monthly peak of 5.7 billion calls in October 2019. YouMail says calls are now 27% above the April trough of roughly 2.8 billion robocalls.
Also in July, scam robocalls were up 12%, to roughly 1.7 billion calls. YouMail reported a 22% increase in telemarketing calls to to 500 million. YouMail said the trend was driven by call centers continuing to open, where there are now people to handle return calls or “press 1” when called, YouMail said.
If you’re looking for scams to avoid, watch out for car warranty calls, which YouMail said became the most frequently made robocalls for the first time, surpassing health-related scams.
