Au Pair In America Total Cost

Rockville, MD, July 15, 2020  —  The Au Pair Program, a category within the U.S. Department of State’s Exchange Visitor Program (EVP), has been promoting daily cultural exchange in American homes for more than 30 years. Through the Au Pair program, participants and host families take part in a mutually rewarding, intercultural opportunity. Participants can continue their education at U.S. universities and colleges while experiencing everyday life with an American family. Hosts receive reliable and responsible childcare support from individuals who become part of the family. Each year, au pairs care for over 50, 000 children across 50 states and the District of Columbia.

The  Alliance for International Exchange  commissioned , an independent firm, to conduct a thorough evaluation of the Au Pair Exchange Visitor Program. surveyed 10, 881 au pair participant alumni and 6, 452 host families to determine the impact of the program. The findings presented in this Executive Summary are based on:

I am the founder of a new business so (needless to say) I work a ton and have meetings all over the place. Given this, we decided a few years ago to get an au pair.

Pros And Cons Of Au Pair Childcare

We had great success with our first two au pairs. Our first au pair Stina was from Sweden and despite being 18 when she joined us she was mature and dedicated to the job and our children. Since Stina was our first au pair we learned how to make it work together. Reflecting back on it now I realize how great she was - she set the bar high for our next au pair. Our second au pair Katharina was from Germany and had already worked for a family here for a year. Unfortunately they were moving so she was looking for a second year. We got to meet her in person and we knew right away she would rock the job. And she did. If you could grade au pairs she would have gotten an A+.

During the time frame of our first two au pairs, our youngest child was in preschool at a half day program. So while we kept our nanny (who has been with us since the birth of our older child) to work from 3pm to 7pm, both our first two au pairs had fairly booked schedules. They got up with the kids, fed them and took them to school all from about 6:30-8:30am. Then they picked up our youngest from preschool and worked from 12-3pm when our nanny arrived. This was in addition to babysitting every other Saturday and travelling with us on the two big trips we take each year.

After two great experiences with Stina and Katharina, we thought we had the au pair thing nailed. In retrospect we just got lucky with two great au pairs….

Au Pair Germany

Our last au pair was from France. I’m not going to get into details about why she was so horrible but just trust me - she was horrible. Not only that, her hours were minimal. When she joined us, our youngest was already in full-day kindergarten. We still had our nanny working 3-7pm so our au pair’s schedule included 2 hours each weekday morning, some hours in the weekday evenings if we needed her to work late (which was rare), babysitting every other Saturday evening, and travel. I would estimate the average work week was 15-20 hours.

Our experience with our third au pair and the changing needs of our family got me thinking…What is the true cost of an au pair? So in typical Eden fashion I crunched some numbers which you see below. While not every family will have the same costs (some don’t get their au pair a car for example), I believe my analysis is directionally correct for most au pair situations.

Taking these total costs into account, I then figured out what the hourly cost is given certain numbers of hours worked per week. The au pair program allows for a maximum of 45 hours per week; you CANNOT go above this under any circumstances. And if you look at the chart below, if your au pair works 40-45 hours per week on a consistent basis, then you are not paying much per hour - likely less than you would pay to a nanny or babysitter. However our family was working our last au pair only 15-20 hours per week. Our effective hourly rate was $30 or more which is way above what you pay a very experienced nanny even in an expensive city like San Francisco. And of course you are giving the au pair room and board.

Pros And Cons Of Being An Au Pair

I realize we are lucky to have our children in a school that has long hours and an afterschool program. I realize we are lucky to have a great nanny who has worked for us for 8.5 years and is able to cover the afternoons. I realize we are lucky to have family who can help out from time to time. Not every family does.

I hope this analysis was helpful to you. It was helpful to us in deciding not to get another au pair. That being said, our experience with our first two au pairs was amazing - our children still Skype with them and both have come back to visit us. Not everything is about the money. But if you think an au pair is a super cheap form of childcare, you should crunch the numbers and think again. An au pair costs $16, 900 to $25, 000 per year or $1, 400 to $2, 100 per month on average. The cost of an au pair includes annual agency program fees of $8, 500 to $10, 500, match processing fees of $250 to $525, and a minimum stipend of $146 to $250 per week.

An au pair costs $325 to $480 per week, regardless of the number of children. In comparison, a live-in nanny costs $700 to $1, 200 per week for the first child plus $50 to $180 per week for each additional child.
