Millions of Americans are on alert for unhealthy air quality as smoke from wildfires in neighboring Canada drifts to the United States.

Wildfires have burned a record of 20 million acres across Canada so far this year, with no end in sight. There are currently 500 active wildfires throughout the country and more than 250 have been deemed out of control, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Center. The smoke has been making its way to the U.S. for over a month.

Air quality will gradually improve during the holiday weekend as the wildfire smoke clears out of the eastern U.S. But with no end in sight to the wildfires that have burned a record of 20 million acres across Canada so far this year, the smokey skies are likely to return.

The smoke on Friday is stretching from the eastern Great Lakes to the Interstate 95 travel corridor and down to parts of the Southeast.

The Air Quality Index in New York City hit 169 Thursday afternoon, which falls under the unhealthy category. Any number over 100 is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups.

Skies over the United States will be clearer by July 1, 2023, but some light haze from Canadian wildfire smoke could still hang over the East Coast.

Air quality alerts are in effect in 21 states Thursday afternoon as the Canadian wildfire smoke infiltrates the Midwest, Northeast and parts of the South.

As of Thursday morning, 23 U.S. states are under air quality alerts from the Midwest to parts of the South and into the Northeast where wildfire smoke from neighboring Canada is creating hazy skies.

As the day develops, plumes of smoke are expected to linger over the Great Lakes, the Ohio Valley and into the Appalachian Mountains. Some smoke might even make its way into the Mid-Atlantic and parts of New Jersey.

New York City will be largely spared from the heaviest smoke. An air quality alert was issued there only as a precaution. Most of the day will be sunny with perhaps a touch of haze due to the smoke nearby.

Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories issued by the National Weather Service stretch from Montana all the way to the New Jersey shoreline as a fast-moving storm system takes aim.

While the chilly weather was expected to stick around for most of the Midwest, temperatures won't be quite as low as they were earlier in the week. Heavy snow and gusty winds are expected to continue causing problems in the Northwest, especially in higher elevations. Meanwhile, pouring rain will drench much of the West Coast by the end of the week and into the weekend. Over 22.2 million people across the globe have been diagnosed with COVID-19, the disease caused by the new respiratory virus, according to data compiled by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. The actual numbers are believed to be much higher due to testing shortages, many unreported cases and suspicions that some national governments are hiding or downplaying the scope of their outbreaks.

Since the first cases were detected in China in December, the United States has become the worst-affected country, with more than 5.5 million diagnosed cases and at least 172, 945 deaths.

North Carolina State said Wednesday that it's identified clusters of COVID-19 cases at two sorority houses. One sorority has seven positive cases and the other has six positive cases, the school said.

Progress Made In Appalachia But Not Enough

All students who test positive as part of these clusters will be isolated, and all residents of both [sorority] houses are being quarantined, NC State said in a statement Wednesday. Contact tracing has been initiated with direct communication to anyone known to have been in close contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill announced Wednesday that it's identified two clusters of cases, one at a dorm and another at a fraternity house.

The individuals in these clusters have been identified and are isolating and receiving medical monitoring, the university said. All residents in these living spaces will be provided access to additional information about the clusters and next steps. Contact tracing has been initiated with direct communication to anyone determined to have been a close contact with a positive individual.

A White House report on COVID-19 in Georgia says the state's small gains are fragile and statewide progress will require continued, expanded, and stronger mitigation efforts, including in all open schools, according to a copy of the report obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

You put the flu season on top of COVID, this is a very difficult situation to deal with, and that's going to be the second wave Cuomo said. Schools are doing temperature checks on the way in and they're looking for symptomatic children. First, they don't have to be symptomatic; they can be asymptomatic.
