Kingston, Jamaica – Thursday, July 7th, 2022 – Today, Rugby Americas North announced a first-ever partnership with SportsMax TV to broadcast the upcoming 2022 RAN Senior Women’s 12s and Men’s Under-19 tournament on television throughout the Caribbean and live streamed

The four-day event, which will be held at the University of the West Indies, marks the first time it’s been held since 2019 in Bridgetown, Barbados due to the COVID-19 global pandemic.

SportsMax will provide LIVE coverage of the Rugby Americas North (RAN) Tournament regionally and internationally through its cable affiliates across 26 Caribbean territories on SportsMax and SportsMax2, on the SportsMax App, available in the IOS and Google Play stores and on the SportsMax YouTube channel. All games will also be aired on their sister station CEEN TV, a Caribbean-centered variety channel available in North America on Bell Media & Rogers (Canada), Optimum & Verizon Fios (USA) & worldwide on www.ceen.tv.

Sportsmax To Broadcast Ran Senior Women's 12s, Men's U 19 Tournament In Jamaica

Having increased this year from the 10s format that has been played in recent years, the Women’s 12s tournament remains an important development tool for the women’s game and a pathway to the introduction of Senior Women’s 15 a-side international competition around the region. Heading into its fifth year, the Women’s tournament will take place over two days on July 15th to 16th and will include six teams: Jamaica, USA South Panthers, St. Lucia, Dominican Republic, Trinidad & Tobago, and the Cayman Islands.

Friday will see each team play two 30-minute matches, before being reseeded for the second day of competition on Saturday. The top four teams after day one will square off on Saturday in the semi-finals with the winners advancing to the championship final and the two losing teams playing a game each against one of the third-place finishers from day one. The two third-place finishers from each pool will also play each other on Saturday, providing each team with four matches across Friday and Saturday.

In its 18th year running, the Men’s U19 tournament will also include six teams: Mexico, USA South Panthers, Trinidad & Tobago, Bermuda, Cayman Islands and Jamaica. The competition will include match days on the 14th and 15th where the teams will play two 40-minute games. After a rest day on Saturday, the finals on Sunday will see the six teams play one match of two 35-minute halves.

Sportmax shares our vision and sees what a viable product rugby can be to Jamaica and we intend to grow with Sportmax after the tournament and keep the Jamaican public entertained and informed about new and ongoing developments with the sport.”Qualifying for the 2019 Rugby World Cup for the Americas began in March 2016, where across 3 years, 20 teams competed for two direct qualification spots into the final tournamt, and one spot in the Repechage tournamt. For qualification purposes, the two Americas regions Rugby Americas North and Sudamérica Rugby formed the Americas region to compete for the two Americas berths in the World Cup.

One team in the Americas zone, Argtina, qualified automatically after reaching the semi-finals of the 2015 World Cup. The United States and Uruguay qualified as Americas 1 and Americas 2 respectively, while Canada moved to the Repechage tournamt.

Rugby

Round 1 took place in 2016. Two pre-existing competitions, the Rugby Americas North Championship and the South American Rugby Championship Division B served as qualification tournamts, designated as Round 1A and Round 1B respectively. Round 1A was formed by the nine World Rugby members in RAN who were separated into two zones, a south and north zone. The bottom placed team from the 2015 tournamt, Saint Vinct and the Gradines had to play the returning team to the tournamt, Jamaica, to earn the right to compete in the main tournamt, with the winner of the qualifier match joining the south zone. The winners of each zone th competed in the Championship final, who thereby progressed to the Round 1 final. The other round 1 finalist was the winner of Round 1B, the 2016 South American Rugby Championship B, where the winner of Round 1 advanced through to Round 2.

Round 2 also took place in 2016, with the 2016 South American Rugby Championship A forming Round 2A. The team placed bottom at the d of the Championship, played the winner of Round 1 in a promotion/relegation playoff to earn a place in the 2017 CONSUR Rugby Championship A competition and progress to Round 3.

Round 3 took place in 2017, with the top Sudamérica Rugby division, 2017 South American Rugby Championship A, forming Round 3A. The winner of that round, advanced to Round 4. Round 3B was formed by a home-and-away play-off series betwe the top two non-automatic Americas qualifiers, Canada and the United States, where the winner of the play-off series qualified for the World Cup as Americas 1. The loser advanced to Round 4.

Americas

Round 4 took place in early 2018, matching the winner of Round 3A and the loser of 3B against each other in a home and away play-off. The winner of this round on aggregate, qualified as Americas 2. The loser moved to the Repechage tournamt as Americas 3 for a second chance to qualify.

The qualifying match betwe Jamaica and St Vinct and the Gradines was the first qualifying match for the 2019 tournamt, three-and-a-half years before the start of the tournamt. Jamaica defeated St Vinct and the Gradines 48–0, eliminating them from qualifying. The match was played in front of a record crowd of 1, 000 at Arnos Vale Sports Complex, and was refereed by Nigel Ows who had refereed the 2015 Rugby World Cup final.

Americas

Uruguay, as winners, qualify for the Rugby World Cup, their second time without an international play-off (first time in 2003 qualyfiers). Canada, as runners-up, qualify for the Repechage qualifying tournamt.
