Top Ten Smartest States In America

One of the many qualities that people look for in a potential location or company is the intelligence of those around them. This factor can play a huge role in one’s experience at a particular company and can make or break an employee’s time there.

So finding a state with an intelligent population makes sense for both companies and employees. That’s where es in; to help you identify those places in America that might have skipped a grade…or two.

What

Well we went to the source of all things demographic data – the Census – to figure out what criteria about a state would identify it is a smart cookie.

Smartest People In The World With Highest Iq

We set upon the percentage of adults (over 25) with at least a college degree and the percentage of young adults without a high school education (aged 18-24). We then crunched the numbers and were left with this set of the brightest states America has to offer.

The northeast dominates this list, with 9 states on the list. Hawaii is a sunny exception. Read on to see why these states got into a four-year college or skip to the end to see a full chart of all the states.

While there are “objective” criteria for intelligence like IQ scores and SATs, we went with something a little different for this analysis. Many of those tests have been shown to be biased against certain people and places, so we went with criteria that strips away a bit of that bias.

The Smartest States In America

We thought this criteria was representative of the current state of smarts with the potential for a place to improve the education levels of the next generation.

In order to determine the smartest, we ranked all the states for each criteria from one to 50 with one being the “smartest” in any category.

We took the average rank across all criteria, with the place posting the highest overall score being given the diploma for “Smartest State In America”.

Vermont is the smartest state in the nation, proving you don’t need a big population to have big brains. Most Vermonters are highly educated with a high percent having a bachelors degree of greater, and young Vermont adults being more likely than most to have at least a high school degree. We should have guessed the state that invented Ben and Jerry’s and has the most libraries per person would be pretty smart.

Connecticut jumped three spots to the #2 smartest state. Connecticut does a great job of educating young adults, and the older adults are pretty educated themselves.

While Massachusetts dropped from the #1 spot to #3, the state is still pretty smart. Adults over 25 are more likely to have a bachelors in Massachusetts than any other state. Way to go Bay State.

New Hampshire might be known for its tiny small and lush wilderness, but they should be known for being pretty smart, too. Only 9.2% of New Hampshire residents 18-24 have less than a high school education.

Virginians, neck and neck with New Hampshire and Massachusetts, are one of the smartest states in the nation. Virginians are fairly likely to have graduated high school and college, which are pretty smart moves.

The garden state is the 6th smartest state and the 6th northeastern state on the list. New Jersey made the list last year and kept hitting the books to make their spot for this year.

Rhode Island is the 8th smartest state. Up in the Ocean state, residents are big on using their smarts. Rhode Islanders are highly educated.

But in reality, intelligence often has something to do with where you live, grew up, and enjoyed an education.

As the class of 2022 graduate from schools and colleges across the country, we’ve analyzed a series of factors to rank and determine the most intelligent states and regions in America (and those that are least intelligent). You might be surprised at some of the results!

What Us State Is The Smartest? (with Pictures)

Ranked as the smartest state in America with an overall index score of 93.9, we have the New England region of Massachusetts, famed for its high-achieving schools and colleges including the prestigious Harvard University.

Perhaps unsurprisingly then, Massachusetts ranks first for percentage of the population with a bachelor’s degree (44.98%) and advanced degree (20.30%), as well as having the second-highest average IQ (103.1) and highest average ACT scores (27.6).

Revealed:

Next up, home of Yale University, Connecticut scores 73.8 overall, ranking as the second-smartest state in America. Connecticut also places among the top states for bachelor’s (39.84%) and advanced degrees (17.84%), as well as average ACT score (27.2). However, despite the academic achievement, Connecticut can only place ninth for average IQ (101.2).

In third, Maryland (72.8) is another of the most educated states in America, with over four in ten (40.88%) residents having a bachelor’s degree and one in five (19.08%) having an advanced degree. Again, though, college honors don’t always equate to overall cleverness, with Maryland only just placing among the top half of states for average IQ (100).

Meanwhile, Virginia and Vermont trail closely behind with index scores of 72.5 and 72.2, respectively. Notably, Virginia has the fourth-highest rate of residents with an advanced degree (17.24%), while Vermont records the fourth-highest average IQ in America.

Interestingly, just missing out on a top five overall spot, we have New Hampshire, home of America’s highest average IQ (103.2), while New York can only place 11th despite New York City’s two Ivy League schools.

These Are The Smartest And Dumbest States In The Us

We’ve compared the smartest states in America, but what about the regions bringing up the rear? Or, in other words, which are America’s stupidest states?

Well, ranking bottom with an overall index score of just 12.63, West Virginia claims the unwanted crown as America’s most unintelligent state. This is contributed by the region having among the lowest average IQs (97.2) and lowest rate of residents with at least a bachelor’s degree (87.14%).

Not much better off, we have Mississippi, with a lowly index score of just 13.28. Mississippi records the nation’s third-lowest average IQ by state, and places among the bottom three for rate of high school diplomas (85.3%), bachelor’s degrees (22.31%), and advanced degrees (8.64%).

The state has the second-lowest average IQ (95.2), and also ranks among the lowest for rate of high school diplomas (85.96%), bachelor’s degrees (24.98%), and advanced degrees (8.93%) achieved.

Rounding out the bottom five, we have Arkansas (19.07) and Nevada (19.97), both of which rank among the worst states for average IQ, with Arkansas (97.1) only slightly better than Nevada (96.6). Arkansas also has the worst rate of residents with education to an advanced degree level (8.26%), while Nevada has the lowest scoring average ACT results (17.8).

Meanwhile, New Mexico just escapes a place in the bottom five overall but does record the lowest IQ of any US state, with residents scoring an average of just 95.
