Childish Gambino's This is America is already lighting up YouTube and has a whole new feeling when mashed up with Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe.
This Is America So Call Me Maybe, The Perfect Timing
YouTube user Loti edited Gambino's video to swap out the song with Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen, making the new video titled This Is America, so Call Me Maybe feel like a happy dance anthem until a man gets shot in the head.
Childish Gambino, aka actor Donald Glover, has quickly racked up over 100 million views since releasing the original music video on May 5, earning an impressive 55 million of those views in just four days. This newer mashup, uploaded on May 11, has received 1.5 million views as of Sunday.
Gambino's video is also a masterful commentary on racism, rampant gun violence in America, and the ongoing desensitization of it via social media.
The Struggle Can Has Begin ?
It's almost creepy how perfect the 2012 hit song syncs up to Gambino's dance movements, with the edit using about one minute of the video. Especially the smiley group dance that starts up just seconds after the murder of a man in a chair.
Loti clarified on his YouTube page that adding the upbeat track to the video is not meant to poke fun at the original's message, he just wanted to make something fun for the internet to watch.
I just want to make this clear, my intentions weren't to be disrespectful to the message of the song, Loti wrote on the YouTube video page. I wasn't purposefully to be ignorant to the climate we're in, but i think the fact that so many people of all races are enjoying this is something to look at. It's just a meme made to laugh at, nothing else.
People Are Furious That A 'this Is America' Meme Has Gone Viral
Childish Gambino's acting alter-ego is also heading to movie screens this month, playing a younger Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story . Solo opens on on May 24 in Australia and May 25 in the US and UK.Something strange has been happening since Childish Gambino's This Is America video dropped. Memes are surfacing, as they inevitably do, and some people are pushing back.
It's disrespectful is a common criticism(opens in a new tab) directed at the meme-makers and sharers. Some feel the video's powerful messages, which together amount to a statement on the black experience in the United States, qualify it as a sacred work.
That's a completely valid read. The video is an exceptional framing device for Gambino's song, which contrasts joyful, cheery melodies against a harsh, thumping trap beat. But it's also a standalone work with its own artistic merits.
This Is America, So Call Me Maybe”: La Mezcla Entre Childish Gambino Y Carly Rae Jepsen
Donald Glover, the IRL voice of Gambino, slyly commented on the video's meaning when he was asked about it(opens in a new tab) at the recent 2018 Met Gala. I just wanted to make, you know, a good song, and something people could play on the Fourth of July, he said, grinning.
Something that people can play on the Fourth of July, a.k.a. Independence Day. The most patriotic of patriotic holidays. A song, and a video, about the inescapable reality that a marginalized community in this country faces on a daily basis. Can you see it?

Ibra Ake, the video's producer, offered a much more explicit read during a recent radio interview(opens in a new tab) . Discussing the video's violence -- Gambino guns down unarmed black people at two specific moments -- Ake pointed out that the video's use of imagery is itself both informed by and a reaction to the state of American life in 2018.
Call Me Maybe (best Version?)
Our goal is to normalize blackness. It’s, like, this is how we would like to dance, but we have to be aware of the danger and the politics of how we’re perceived and the implications of the history of how we were treated, he said.
There’s all this math you’re constantly doing expressing yourself. We’re trying to not have to explain ourselves to others and just exist, and not censor what our existence looks like as people.
These quotes help to highlight the idea we started out with above, that the meme-ification of This Is America is perceived by some as disrespectful. The music video isn't your usual brand of pop fluff, but it's saying something important. Laying down Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe (or whatever else) on top of it drowns out the creator's intent, the critics point out.
This Is America, So Call Me Maybe
Does it though? Memes are an inevitable product of the age that we live in. It's not like Glover, Ake, director Hiro Murai, and the other creative forces involved in making This Is America weren't aware.
Even if they didn't know how big the splash would be, they knew what they were putting out into the world with that video. They knew equally well what happens on the internet when a popular work enters the mainstream consciousness.

The video syncs up as well as it does because This Is America was consciously built as a modern work of pop music. It plays at 120 beats per minute (BPM), a fairly standard tempo for some of the biggest songs of the modern pop/rock era. It lines up with Call Me Maybe because they share the same DNA.
Quand Le Clip De
That's the whole point. This Is America subverts pop standards to deliver its message to the broadest possible audience. You can think the memes are disrespectful, or you can feel instead that they help get the word out on an important work.
Either way, the video is having its intended effect: We're all talking about it and we're all engaging with what it's saying. This is America, memes and all.

Childish Gambino stunned the world when he dropped his “This Is America” video earlier this month. It hasn’t even been out a week yet and, predictably, the internet has already soiled it.

The video is a scalding meditation on racism and gun violence in America, set to the juxtaposed sounds of a choir singing and hard, bass-heavy trap beats. The video features Donald Glover’s disconcerting, albeit rhythmic, dancing. Dancing that, as YouTuber LOTI noticed, would fit remarkably well with modern pop songs.
Someone Mashed Up Childish Gambino's 'this Is America' With 'call Me Maybe' And You Gotta See It
Yes, that’s right: “This Is America, so Call Me Maybe” is a thing that now exists. It puts the new Gambino video to the tune of Jepsen’s chart-topping 2011 hit, and you should be appalled by its tastelessness. But, maybe, you should also be impressed by how fantastically well these two songs sync up?
, and the video immediately made a huge splash. As the Daily Dot’s Audra Schroeder wrote, “Glover walks through a series of scenes filmed in a warehouse, and they change as the song’s tone does too. In one scene, Glover dances with a choir before spraying them with a machine gun, possibly a reference to the 2015 Charleston, South Carolina, church shooting.”
A song as instantly popular and riveting as “This Is America” was bound to become a meme sooner or later, but if you’re a YouTuber, maybe err on the side of caution with this one. You can watch the mash-up above, or you can just watch Childish Gambino’s original video—which has now surpassed 90 million views—here.
