For seven years, Good Morning America viewers watched the always-cheerful Sam Champion deliver the latest weather forecast. Then, much to the dismay of
Viewers have since grown to love weather anchor and ABC News Chief Meteorologist Ginger Zee, occasionally Sam will grace fans with his presence on the show. Naturally, his appearances here and there have made folks wonder if Sam is planning on returning to the morning program for good.

In late May, ABC announced that Sam would be returning to ABC7's Eyewitness News in New York to do the weekday morning and noon weather reports.

The former KATU-TV meteorologist will return to Oregon as part of the ABC News team reporting on the total solar eclipse on Aug. 21.
Rob Marciano says his years working in Portland for KATU-TV (2) make him happy to come back whenever he can. And there's nothing like a total solar eclipse to give him a great reason.
Marciano spent 1997 to 2003 as KATU's chief meteorologist before moving on up to CNN, Entertainment Tonight, and, since 2014, senior meteorologist for ABC News.

The now New York-based Marciano will be back in Oregon on Aug. 21, reporting from Lincoln City, as the total solar eclipse makes first landfall.
I love the Pacific Northwest, says Marciano in a phone call, so any excuse to get back there, especially in summer, is something I don't want to pass up. When I saw that Oregon was going to be in the path of totality -- the band about 60 miles wide in which the moon will blot out all light from the sun -- I immediately pitched going somewhere like Madras, where the highest chance of clear skies is.
It didn't take long for others, Marciano says, to go from having faint interest to thinking, Wow, this is going to be huge, it's a once in a lifetime thing. It's really a coast-to-coast block party. That's the way we're going to treat it.
Rob Marciano 'banned' From 'gma' Studio, Wants Back In
There will be other national TV crews in Oregon for the eclipse, positioned in such path of totality hot spots as Madras and Salem. Marciano says the ABC News plans call for him to be in Lincoln City; World News Tonight anchor David Muir to be on the coast of South Carolina, where the solar eclipse will finish its journey across the contiguous U.S.; and ABC News chief meteorologist Ginger Zee in the middle.

Portland has seen its share of rotating TV personalities. But for those with long memories, certain names have stood the test of time. Whether they were part of the formative years of Portland TV, came into living rooms for so many years they felt like family, or bounced from Portland to the national spotlight, there's a group of TV people who call up particularly strong memories.
Having lived in Oregon, I certainly know during summertime on the Oregon beaches, there's a better than 50 percent chance of seeing low clouds, certainly in the morning.

But, Marciano says, There are greater powers that determine how we make television, so ABC News will be covering the eclipse from coast to coast.
ABC News is also planning on having correspondent Matt Gutman in Madras, to bring us the high desert clarity of the eclipse, as Marciano says.
I'm going to milk it a little bit, Marciano says, of having a work-related reason to come back to Oregon for a visit. I arrive Saturday, and do a live 'Good Morning America' Sunday morning from Lincoln City, 'World News Tonight' from Oregon on Sunday, 'Good Morning America' again on Monday morning, and then we do our special coverage.
Good Morning America' Weekend Anchor Dan Harris Is Leaving After 21 Years
Muir will anchor the ABC News special, The Great American Eclipse, scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21 on KATU.
Marciano is scheduled to be reporting from Lincoln City in the morning on Monday, Aug. 21, as part of the special coverage.

We rented a house in Lincoln City, Marciano says, to house the team coming to work on the eclipse report. And Marciano adds that he's been on the phone with KATU weather anchor Rhonda Shelby nearly every day, talking weather, and asking 'Are we going to see clouds on the coast?' We both feel more optimistic than we did.

As the great celestial show gets closer, Marciano says, he's enjoying the growing interest. To see eclipse fever take hold is exciting for me, as a science geek.
And when the eclipse is over, Marciano hopes to make my way back to Portland, see some old friends, maybe go for a hike in the gorge, and go visit the Deschutes Brewery, in the Pearl District.
