Ohana, Feeding America's Asian/Pacific Islander affinity group, hosted a casual conversation with two AAPI President & CEOs, Amy Marvin of Hawaii Foodbank and Radha Muthiah of Capital Area Food Bank.

Historically, anti-hunger programs have engendered bipartisan support. That has become more challenging in today’s more polarized political environment. Given the need to have more moderate and conservative voices championing anti-hunger issues, and the need for less partisanship on hunger issues, both sides of the aisle must work together in support of program priorities that have a shot at becoming law. Polling reflects this wide bipartisan support for nutrition and anti-hunger programs. Elected officials need to be more responsive to these concerns.

Hunger In The United States

Hear about the latest on SNAP policy and operations from USDA Food and Nutrition Services SNAP Deputy Administrator Catherine Buhrig. With the end to the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency, changes are underway in SNAP. This interactive session will allow time for attendees to provide the USDA SNAP team with feedback and comments about lessons learned during the pandemic and how the nation’s top defense against hunger program is operating in their communities.

Hear about the latest on TEFAP and commodity policy and operations from USDA Food and Nutrition Service staff. This interactive session will allow time for attendees to ask questions of the USDA TEFAP team and discuss lessons learned during the pandemic and how the programs are operating in local communities.

This session reviews evidence and best practices for addressing food insecurity within health care settings and highlights programmatic and advocacy opportunities to advance this work in communities. There is a high-level overview of how food insecurity and health are connected, followed by a review of research on food bank-health care partnerships and interventions. The session also provides a clinical perspective on the opportunities, challenges, and resources for working with patients to address food insecurity. Speakers include:

On Monday, Nov. 28, the Adequacy of Service subcommittee hosted a network webinar to share initial recommendations on the path to a contract amendment.

This session will explore the anti-hunger community’s role and opportunities for supporting equity-driven strategies incorporating nutrition into early childhood and maternal and child health portfolios, grounded in community voice and strategic partnerships.

Part 2: Group discussion of various core topics around retail agency capacity building. The room is set up in round tables of 10 and each table will discuss best practices around the following topics. Maximizing your Retail Opportunity.  This is a collaboration session designed to help co-create customized strategies and tactics around agency/retail capacity building. The goal is to leave this 2-part workshop with a strategic shell/direction on expanding your agency/retail capacity.       In Part 1, you learned from network leaders about their agency capacity strategy, best practices, and key lessons.   TABLE DISCUSSIONS: Objectives - key takeaways, what would you bring back to your food bank?  Agencies Expansion o How to use $1M to build up your agencies o What strategies to build up agencies? White House Conference On Hunger, Nutrition, And Health

In part 1, learn from network leaders about their agency capacity strategy, best practices, and lessons learned.  Part 2 is a collaboration session, If I Had a Million Dollars to help co-create customized strategies and tactics around agency capacity building. The goal is to leave this 2 part workshop with a strategic shell/direction on expanding your agency capacity.            Hear from a panel of network leaders and SMEs around retail recovery, retail industry trends, agency capacity expansion, leveraging technology in new ways and more! Learn best practices from this group of all-stars and come prepared to ask questions in the engaging information-packed session.

Collecting from lessons learned from the pandemic, food sourcing voices across the network, and from national donors – hyper local food recuse via a strong agency network is critical to feeding hungry neighbors across the network. In this session we will discuss FANO’s agency capacity strategy and hear from members who are participating in the first round of retail agency capacity grants. They will share insights from what they have learned so far and how they intend to build and strengthen their agency network to grow their retail rescue program by building capacity of agency partners and improving equitable access to nutritious food. Additionally, learn about what to expect in FY23 and help prepare your foodbank for additional grant opportunities to support this work. There will be time for open Q&A, so please come with questions!

This training will focus on Feeding America Member Contract requirements specific to Agency Relations and delineate what requirements are Feeding America requirements versus other requirements from entities like the IRS and USDA. It will provide a solid foundation in working with partners agencies

Feeding America: Connecting Food Banks, Ending Hunger

This session will address the implications of how an amendment to the 1976 tax reform act determines precisely the type of agency eligible to receive donated product, the eligible client population and the rules for transferring that donated product to eligible recipients. Specific application of IRS code 170e3 to real life agency relations and program examples will be discussed. This session is specifically targeted for staff new to agency relations/programs and lacking familiarity with the IRS regulations addressing the handling of donated product.

The purpose of this session is to inform our network members on the work we have started to shape a national perspective on all three agri streams: produce, protein and dairy. With support of a 3rd party consultant, the Feeding America Supply Chain team conducted an analysis of current and future state of sourcing for agri foods. The work was conducted in calendar Q12021 and includes farm, processor, manufacturing and retail. As we move forward together, some of the questions we are seeking to address:

National Anti Hunger Policy Conference

The AIB Consolidated Standards for Inspection have been updated and will go into effect on January 1, 2023.  Senior AIB International staff will explain what changes are being made and why.  We will review all of the new requirements and significant changes to understand how they will impact the Feeding America Network.  We will also answer any all questions you have about the new Consolidated Standards.   

We will close the Virtual Annual Conference with one final session, a town hall to allow for attendees to pose questions and share reflections. We will continue our focus on voices igniting change and engage CEO Claire Babineaux-Fontenot, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Katie Fitzgerald, Vice President, External Affairs Vince Hall, Director of New Partnerships – Western Region, Michele Bart and NAC Chair Gayle Carlson. The Closing Town Hall will be moderated by Chief Network Officer, Kathryn Strickland.

Feeding America CEO Claire Babineaux-Fontenot will deliver welcome remarks to officially kick off the start of the Annual Conference.
